This morning, it was 38 (I’m getting tired of this cold weather), partially overcast with the moon starting to wane, & breezy at 6:00. A few crows & geese were already sounding off but the swamp was again silent. Except for the occasional woodpecker hammering or calling, there was no song bird activity. At about 7:45, an owl hooted twice to the east. At 8, I saw the 1st coon of the season moving from somewhere in front of me into the swamp. Yesterday on another site, I had responded to someone that I hadn’t heard or seen a deer so far. Usually I see 1-2 every day. At 8, 6 deer moved through the woods to the west & entered the wheat field. A few minutes later something got them running to the SE out of sight.
Nothing much was going on, even my daily visitor, a black capped chickadee, hadn’t shown up. At about 9:30, I thought I heard a gobble way to the east. I called a few times & never got a response. At 10:40, I heard a strangled gobble to the east & not that far off. Based on the gobble, I think it was a jake. Ten minutes later, 1 hammered to the west even close but on the north side of the woods. I got it to respond a couple of time but not any closer. He gobbled several more times on his own & had moved a little closer sounding like he was near where I park in the fall. I only had about an hour to get him to come in but he wasn’t in a playful mood. At about 11:35, he gobbled & had moved quite a ways west. I like to leave 15 mins or so before the end of legal hunting time in case an opportunity arises on the way out.
It was 58 when I got to the truck I would normally hunt the other woods in the morning but I think I’ll go back to the swamp & see if he is in a more playful mood.
