I got into the opening between the woods behind my Sis’s house about 12:15 this afternoon.
I really didn’t expect anything to happen for at least an hour or 2 so was just enjoying a beautiful day when, about 30 minutes after sitting down, I spotted a bushy running across the recently combined bean field. I followed it in the scope hoping it would stop which it did. Since it was in the middle of an open field with no shade, I paced off the distance when I went to pick it up. The male bit the dirt at 58 paces which equals 58 yards, I think my longest squirrel shot with the .17.
About 10 minutes later, I heard 1 barking in the woods & tried to find it but it shut up. There were a lot of leaves down so it was pretty noisy sneaking. I did bump 2 deer but couldn’t see what they were.
I sat back down &, at 1:11, saw 1 run through the opening into the woods. It was almost immediately by another with neither stopping for a shot. About a minutes later, a 3rd bushy entered the opening & stopped by literally flew back the way it came as I tried to get the rifle up. Just a few seconds later, I spotted a tail flashing a few feet up a tree right in front of me. I put the scope on it but could only see tail until it hopped to another tree & stopped parallel to the ground. This 1 fell into some brush where I couldn’t see it so I went picked it up, walked the less than 20 yards back to my seat &, as fast as things were moving, got another clip out of my vest as well as a bottle of water. I sat down, took a drink, set the bottle down, looked up, & thought: “You have GOT to be kidding me!!” I let this 1 lie where it fell as it was in the grass & shade. All 5 had been moving to the north. This 1 was going south & I think it was 1 of the 2 that went into the woods. That was the fastest action I have had this year, saw at least 4, killing 2 in under 2 minutes. I don’t think I have ever killed 2 as quickly.
I was just sitting there zoning out when there was an awful crashing coming towards me from the woods on my right. I instinctively started to bring up the .17 when a spotless fawn jumped into the clearing. We looked at each other for a few seconds when it calmly trotted across the clearing & into the other woods. A few minutes later, my BIL came up on his Gator & we cruised through both sections of woods looking for rubs as there were 2 near where I sit & another across the clearing. We didn’t find anything new. I waited for about 30 minutes after he left & did a slow walk around of both woods but didn’t see any bushies. I did jump 2 more deer & found another rub.
I got resettled about 30 & continued to enjoy the day when a bushy appeared on top of a tall stump in front of me breaking my reverie. I decided 4 was enough for the day & headed out with 3 males & 1 female. I’m up to 20 for the year & would like to get between 5 & 10 more before calling it quits. Ron, It looks like I was premature yesterday when I told you we might not have enough squirrels for next spring’s turkey camp.
BTW, A few days ago, someone told me I needed to pick up more rocks from my buddies field. Well, yesterday, after hunting for 3 hours, seeing 2 with no shots, I picked up a couple of more rocks.
The Polaris rides a little higher & more level when empty.
