but productive day which started at 5:45 when I had to get up to pick-up my Sister & head to Columbus (Gahanna) for a Drs. appt. I have always loved Steak & Shake but they closed the local 1 so I told Kathy that we were eating lunch at S&S no matter what time it was. After a good result at the Doc’s, we headed to the S&S in Polaris at 10. After the 1st few fries & a bite of the double cheeseburger with the works, I remembered why I like it so much. I hadn’t been to the New Cabela’s, & since it was just up the block, we decided to stop & check it out. To be honest, I wasn’t all that impressed. It isn’t as big or nice as the 1 up in MI. I knew that a new Dick’s/Field & stream store has been opened but didn’t know where until we drove past it too late to go back & check it out but at least I know where it is for the next time.
After getting to Kathy’s & changing clothes, I headed to a woods I hadn’t hunted yet this year. I got settled in at 1 & about 1:30, sawing moving near a blowdown. I has almost set-up closer but decided not too. Sometime later took a nice power nap. About 3:30, I decided to move closer to the blowdown & it paid off. About 3:45, I spotted 1 at the end of the blowdown behind a big shag bark. I was for about 5 minutes & it never showed itself. I have found that, if after 5 minutes of so, they don’t move out to where I can see them, they’ve usually headed the other way. I let my guard down &, after a couple of minutes, there it was behind some small weeds looking at me. The last thing she saw was they .17 ballistic tipped Hornady.
About 45 minutes or so later, 1 started barking close behind me. I stood, turned around & moved to the right to use a sapling as a rest. I scanned the trees but couldn’t spot it. Finally, I caught the flick of a tail on the back side of the tree right in front of me. I t didn’t moved for several minutes but I finally spotted some leaves moving higher up & saw it move to the front of the tree & start up. I won’t shoot at a moving squirrel with the rifle but, luckily for me, not so much for him, he stopped in the fork of the tree top & hit the ground at 4:44. That’s number 10 & 11 for the year.
I was beginning to question my shooting/rifle scope as I had missed the last 4 I shot at, 2 Monday morning & 2 Saturday afternoon. All were very easy shots that I have made often. I had decided that, if I missed again, the shooting bench & targets would be brought out for a sighting-in session. After today, I know that the scope is on & that it was some sort of shooter error but I sure don’t know what.
I think it’s about time to crash in front of the TV. Plan to hit the woods behind the house in the morning.
