I have 1 in my vest but use it very sparingly & usually as a desperation call. (It may get used tomorrow & Weds if the birds don't break loose.) The way I use it could spook any birds that might be close because of the movement. While sitting, I hold the call up a arms length the lower it as I'm shaking it. I may double or triple gobble with it. I'm sure there are better ways to use it that would be less likely to be seen by other birds.

Gobbler shaker? How do you use it? The one we have ,... you shake it, or punch it like an accordion. We have generally only used this for fighting /cuttin/ purr scenarios, or as a last ditch option on a last ditch hunt or end of season . One time we pulled in a fox, that jumped a deer, that prolly moved a LB "down line"?We killed the silent LB. We are not opposed to thinking outside the box, or having Fun.

Tim, I bought one and was going to use it this spring, however it sounds like *&%$! I get way better gobbles out of a 2 sided box call with rubber bands....... I couldn't get a gobbler to answer it like they do to the box call. It's going in the 'to the kids' pile!!! Momma will thank me!!

As to how/when I use the gobble call. Typically only on stubborn hung-up birds that are out of site and don't seem to want to commit to closing the gap when I can't move any closer. I've struck gobblers I didn't know were there using it before and have drawn a couple in while yelping and cutting with a mouth call and hitting the gobble box! But, just like the rest of the calls in the vest........ if they don't like it they don't like it! And there's always the possibility of the travelling turkey hunter trying to stalk your position, which makes setup selection very important.

Well, I was desperate this morning so dug mine out of my vest. I sent out 2 single gobbles & a double gobble. All I did was PO a fox squirrel. He sat there cussing me up 1 side & down the other for at least 10 mins. That last frayed nerve finally snapped so I turned & said in a loud voice: "WHY DON'T YOU SHUT UP!!!!" I'll be darned if it didn't stop. I wish I had known I had that power years ago. I would havce used it on some people I knew/know.

Recently (the last few years) I have added the gobble to my "tool box". I don't use a shaker though, I just gobble on a box call. I view the gobble shaker like I do those push-pin fighting purr calls...something I don't need because I already am carrying a call that can do what I want.
I have found that I need a box with a relatively narrow channel to be able to gobble on it. I have a short box that is 1 1/2 inch across the rails and I can't gobble on it worth a darn. I have another short box that is 1 5/16 across and a long box that is 1 1/8 across and I can gobble on both those calls.
I hold the box a lot firmer to gobble then when I yelp, and then shake the paddle between the insides of my index & middle fingers with the hinge down and paddle up. I throw in a couple of gobbler yelps sometimes right after the gobble to sound like a jake gobbling as they tend to do that quite often. I don't think I need to be perfect with my gobble as jakes can really mess up a gobble. Sounding like a jake is good IMO.
Last year in Wis I had a gobbler that was hanging up at about 80 yards. I had worked him and his buddy several times with hen calls over several days but they would not come in. I did manage to kill his buddy 2 days before so he may have been missing his bud. I was calling to him for almost an hour. The hen talk was firing him up but not bringing him in. So I gobbled at him. He responded and I gobbled back at him. We gobbled back and forth at each other several times, sometimes double and triple gobbling. It got quiet for a while and then I heard him drumming. I stayed quiet and he gobbled at about 45 yards on his own, but the cover was thick and I could not see him. A soft cluck and purr brought him in right now and I shot him at 18 yards.
I will also gobble in the evening after I think the birds are in the trees to try and locate a roosted gobbler. Sometimes throwing out some cuts or a fly up cackle right before or after gobbling.
Since I hunt public land a lot I am careful as to when I use the gobble. Even though the situation may be right for the birds, it may not be right for safety reasons.

I use the shaker call. Mostly near the end of the season when some of the gobblers are beginning to get together again. I killed one last yr using it. There were three gobblers that were roosting in the same area and would get together at flydown. I used the shaker call to get them close and killed a nice bird with 1 5/8" spur (see avatar). Depending where I'm hunting (not in PA) I use it cold calling just to let them know there are turkeys in the area. BTW it sounds more like a jake so it's really not a threat to other gobblers but it might entice a bigger gobbler to come looking for the jake gobbling in his area.

Thanks guys! I just can't get excited about the shaker...I agree with Superful and Gary that a box call with the right rubber band sounds much better!

I use a Primos gobble shaker in the fall every now and then, worked to help pull one in that wouldn't budge for a friend last fall, too bad he missed!
