Season opens up Monday morning and I got permission to hunt a farm I've taken a double bearded gobbler on before and where I've taken the majority of the birds I've hunted. I know it that well and it's that good! There have been good hatches the last 2-3 years so I'm expecting there to be lots of action or at least lots of gobbling! Monday morning can't get here fast enough.Until then there's mushroom hunting and crappie fishing to occupy my time once I get done with the 6.5 hours of work left today! The countdown has officially begun. The vest is loaded withcalls, rain gear and all other manner of odds-n-ends I carry to the woods ready to go. It's hard to concentrate on work whilethinking about turkey hunting.......... you know!

Looking forward to seeing some success pictures and some stories Hopefully I'll have some pictures and a story after tomorrow morning! I found some morels yesterday and caught my first fish of the year (I'm off to a late start!) It was a very ambitious bluegill hybrid (had a big mouth) that hit one of my crankbaits while fishing a stream for smallmouth bass. It began storming before I could hook into a bass..... Today I hit a pond on the conservation land that I thought had been fished out..... It hasn't been. I caught 19 largemouth over about 2 hours. It made the 1/2 mile hike into the place worth it! All were roughly 12-15" in length. No whoppers. They all scrapped good though! Turkeys were gobbling in the woods just below the pond for most of the time I was there. It was a very nice afternoon.
Have a good night all!

Wellll, sorry it's been a couple days since reporting in, things got a little rough at Mom's house. We kind of locked horns Tuesday evening and put me into a cranky place for a day. At any rate, after having seen 6 longbeards in the field the Saturday before the opener I was feeling pretty good about my spot. I left it be until Monday morning. Monday I had at least one hen and 2 gobblers roosted on the ridge about 70 yards behind me. I apparently made the wrong choice in challenging the hen right off the bat with the calling 'cuz she led the gobblers away from me. They would answer, but not come on out in the field then heard their gobbles get further and further away. About 20 minutes later 3 jakes came out and strolled right into my setup, gobbling as they came. This trio were the 'bullies of the field". They came in to 30 yards of me before easing back out and heading toward a bearded hen I had been watching up in the far corner of the field. She didn't want much to do with them, so they came back toward my side of the field and collected a 4th jake to hang out with them. Well, I noticed from across the other side of the field, a white head bobbing along the edge of the timber. I glass it and could see it was a male.... I called a couple times and out he came making a bee-line toward my setup. I got the shotgun up and ready, then here come the 4 jakes hustling toward him to chase him off. The fighting purrs commenced and I could now see the new bird was also a jake as he changed his course and exited the area! I did see a longbeard in the far end of the field later in the morning with all the birds grouped up again, but he wouldn't even look my way. Tuesday morning I had at least a hen roosted behind me again, soooo I decided to soft call then do a fly-down cackle, which worked well, for the hen! She was off the roost and in the field within 5 minutes. 10 minutes later she was within 10 yards of me, but no gobblers with her today.... I had found 2 gobblers later in the morning, but they spotted me before I spotted them and it was over. It was just a weird start to the season. On a better note, I did come home with over 2 pounds of morels (over 70 of the yummy things). It was nice getting to hunt mushrooms where there are some. Up around the city, it's difficult to find places that haven't been picked over!
I'll be back out Saturday morning to hit the public land by where I live. I hope the birds will be a bit more cooperative!
