It was 44 with a slight misty rain, no wind, & no moon. The weatherman called for “intermittent” showers all morning. I got up at 4:40 & it wasn’t raining but, when I left at 5:30, it was sprinkling. Whenever I get to my parking area early, I usually wait in the truck for 10-15 mins. This morning I decided to head back early because of the rain & it’s a good thing that I did. I had barely got sat down when it flat started to pour, a gully washing frog strangler.
There are pros & cons to hunting in a hub blind in the rain:
Pro = You stay dry.
Con = You can’t hear diddly OR squat & you can’t take a nap.
Every once in awhile, it would let up but it never really stopped until about 10:20. I pondered whether to head out or stay. It seemed rather silly to leave when it stopped after sitting through 4+ hours of rain so I stayed. 10 minutes later, it started to pour even harder. DANG IT!!!! Finally, about 11:10, it let up enough so that I could head to the truck. I had about ¼ mile to walk & ¾ mile on the 4-wheeler. I can’t remember when this old, fat boy covered a ¼ mile so quickly…..Prolly HS. I had the 4-wheeler cranking at about 25 & didn’t even bother to dodge the mud puddles & ended up wetter than if I’d have taken my time. It was still 44 when I got to the truck & my wet hands felt like 2 blocks of ice. Guess what happened right after I pulled into the garage. Yep, it quit raining!! If I’dda waited 15 more minutes……………
I am beginning to question the wisdom of a couple of decisions I made this week.
Monday – The weatherman forecast “intermittent” t-storms all morning. When I got up at 5, it was storming with lightning & the whole 9 yards so I went back to bed. When I realized that it had turned into a great morning, it was 2 late to go out.
Thursday - The weatherman forecast “intermittent” “showers” all morning. It was only sprinkling so out I went. It poured for most of the 5 ½ hrs I was in the woods.
I think my definition of “intermittent” is a lot different than the weatherman as well as his definition showers. In hind sight, I should have gone out Monday & stayed in bed today.
Weather permitting, I’ll hunt behind my buddy’s house tomorrow. Whether I hunt or not, I still have to back & pick up my chair & dekes for the NY trip.
