This morning, it was 48, partially overcast with the moon starting to wane, & breezy at 65:55. An owl started hooting almost immediately. At 6:10. I heard a gobbler in the same NW area as where the bird was yesterday. I called a little & he responded. He gobbled 8 times on the roost, some on his own, some in response. He hit the ground about 6:20 & gobbled several more times. At 6:40, he gobbled & was a lot closer, he had moved south through the woods. He gobbled again & was even closer. I moved a little to my right & got the 11-87 in a semi ready position. He gobbled again & was in the wheat. I called softly & he gobbled, strutted, & did the normal turkey trot dance.
I lost sight of him & then, at 6:50, I saw him out of the corner of my left eye, inside the woods & headed towards the dekes. He got about 20 yards from them & stopped. At this point, I made a mistake, I thought: “You’re mine!!!!” He took a couple of more steps, stretched his neck & looked over the situation. He saw something he didn’t like, turned, & walked away. He didn’t putt or run, just walked away!! 20 more yards…..Just 20 more yards!!!! He got out of sight & gobbled again. He kept going east gobbling several more times until I could barely hear him. At about 8:10, he gobbled again & was headed back towards me. He gobbled several more times both on his own & in response. I did see him 1 more time & he was way out at the edge of the corn stubble & wheat on top of a rise. I lost sight of him but about 10 minutes later, there 2 quick shots from the corner of the south end of the west section of the woods. I suspect that someone had heard him gobbling, at least 30-40 times, & moved to that corner & got him.
The owl hooted again about 8:30 & there were a few crows & the occasional woodpecker. Once in a while there were songbirds but very few. There was 1 whose song sounded like “pretty bird….pretty bird.” Has anyone else heard that and/or know what bird it is? I didn’t see it. Finally, my little chickadee showed up at 10. He’s usually there early but the last 2 days was late.
At 11, I decided to pack up. I went out to the edge of the woods/fields & located a spot to set-up if the bird hadn’t gotten banged today & was still around. I plan to hunt my other woods tomorrow & hit the swamp again Weds.
I got back to the truck about 11:45 & it had warmed up to 71. It would have been a great day to spend all day in the woods & that will happen next week.
