I'm chomping at the bit to get out of here today! Going down to my property to camp for 5 days by ma self and deer hunt! Have a co-worker of mine that recently moved here from Pennsylvania who'll be joining me for one day of the fun. It'll be good to get back out in the woods again! I've only seen one nice buck so far this season, which was last weekend with my daughter. We drove up on a pretty nice 10-point feeding about 35 yards off the side of the road. Looked to be a 4 year old and likely would've taken a ride with me if we'd have met in the woods in a different place and time! Work has been so darn hectic I haven't been able to get all my things together to go on the trip. My wife has been going over my list and putting them together for me. Life is good when you have a great partner! I just have a better feeling about things when I do them myself though........
I hope to have some pictures and stories to share. I know I will have a good time once I'm there. C'mon quittin time!!!!
Have a good'n yall and good luck in your hunts!
John

Wellllll, after spending 3 days camping, getting rained on the 3rd night and getting wet in a borrowed tent because mine had recently acquired some holes....... The borrowed one leaked worse than mine would've! Ha! Had my truck battery go dead on me...... Never did see a deer I could legally shoot while I was in the woods, except for 2 does that stayed very well concealed until they came out between the house and me. They sure know how to stay safe it seems sometimes. I spent another 2 nights at my mom's place.
At any rate, the real full rundown is as follows: I had a 6-point walk by me at 15 yards 15 minutes after setting up opening morning. Things looked a little promising. About 2 hours later I had the 2 does come through offering no shots. Broke for lunch. Came back and saw a spike buck come through a couple hours before dark then nothing else. Day 2 I had a friend come down to hike the timber and help push some deer around. I had gotten in extra early this morning. The deer moved through before daylight. Couldn't see them, much more than shadows slipping through the timber. Not an identifiable deer was seen this day. I did see a wabbit that I nearly stepped on though! Day 3 It had rained overnight, still drizzling in the AM. Woke up in the tent in a puddle. Cell phone was in said puddle. Went to truck to get some dry items and went to start it for some heat. It was dead as a hammer. Spent early part of the morning charging the battery and getting items out of the tent that weren't wet yet, then hit the woods. Never saw a deer..... Day 4 I woke up and heard thunder....... turned off the alarm and went back to sleep! Got up a couple hours later ate breakfast and headed to the woods in the heavy rain. When the rain let up after sitting in it for 4.5 hours, a small 6-point came by at about 20-25 yards. Would've been an easy shot too! No other deer came through the rest of the day. Day 5 I got in and heard one that winded me and that's it! I quit early as I had to pack up everything and make the trip back home.
This was a weird season for my place. After last season seeing 4 different 8-pointers a 10 pointer plus a couple smaller bucks that I didn't shoot last year, I just knew that this season would at least offer some good opportunities to see a nice buck. There was next to no sign in my timber hunting spots or in my field hunting spots. I have to believe that people may have wiped out some of those deer the last few days of season last year. I am regretting only taking 3 days of work off for the season this year!
Oh well, I still had a lot of fun! I do have a couple pictures from my blind while it was sunny and nice, then rainy and wet if I can get them downloaded.
Have a good'n! John

John .. that's why ya' call it hunyin' & not killin', cause you're pickin' the one ya' want!!!! I never went for the rain huntin' but when I did, even duck & goose huntin' was mostly a flop, and what campin' I did, weren't good experiences either!!! Heck, I even headed out of the woods, with a gobbler gobblin' & roosted within 75 yds of me .. naw, I'm just a "gentleman" hunter anymore At least when I'm not spmewhere I don't have a choice Ya' sure musta' had a great time regardless, and hope to see some pics soon!!! Ya' had time away and to enjoy mother nature!!!

At least you got out there, remember a bad day hunting is always better than any day at work. At least the place I work.....
