It was 41 this morning with fairly clear skies & little to no wind when I sat down in my BILs brothers woods. Randy had been having problems with squirrels, reds especially getting into his wood pile & out buildings. He asked me to do whatever damage I could, saying that the woods were loaded with reds & foxes. Since these woods hadn’t been hunted in years, I thought I might be able to get several. The best laid plans………..
A chipmunk came out right away to check me out & didn’t like what he saw so ran off into the woods. About 10 minutes later, I saw movement on a log at my front right. I thought: “That’s a funny color for a squirrel.” It moved & turned out to be a grey & white cat. I hissed at it & it froze. After staring my way for a minute or 2, it slowly moved its feet under it & sat for at least 10 minutes staring at me. I think it thought I was a giant mouse & it was planning its attack. It finally moved off very slowly. I did see a couple of reds but they were too far off for a shot.
A little before 9, I heard acorns dropping from a tree about 12 yards to my right. I say a brief movement in the tree top & figured it was a red. I kept watching & saw a flash of a fox tail. I brought up the .17 & it started down the tree stopping in a small fork. I had a very small window to squeeze in a shot but the .17 bullet is very small. Number 22 was a nice, young female.
I saw several reds running around in the tree tops but none gave me a shot. At 10:30, I went to the truck & swapped the .17 for a 20 & started walking through the woods. I wasn’t very far in when I saw motioned in a blow down. I got the 870 on my shoulder & slowly moved up. Finally, that @#$%^&*() cat showed itself!!!! I walked through the woods twice & never saw another bushy & called it a morning at 11:15. As I neared the truck, guess what I saw? “That darn Cat” was on top of my truck cab. That’s a real good path to that Great Kitty Litter Box in the Sky!! Good thing for the cat, it’s more or less domesticated.
I hate to see such a grand, old tree as this snapped off. It had broken off maybe 10’ from the ground.
