About a year ago, the VA optometrist told me I had cataracts but wouldn’t have to do anything for up to 2 years unless I wanted to have them removed sooner. I noticed last fall that, while I was killing squirrels, I wasn’t hitting them where I thought I was aiming. Then, this spring, I noticed that things were a lot fuzzier, so I decided to see the optometrist/surgeon whom the VA recommended. After several visits for testing/measurements/etc, we scheduled surgery on the right side for 07/22/15. The cataracts will be removed as well as the astigmatism.
I had 3 lenses options, near vision but needing glasses for distance, distance vision but needing glasses for near, or lenses that covered near & distance with no glasses. I opted for the no glasses lenses. I figured that if I had to do this, I might as well get the best possible, do away with the glasses, &, hopefully, not have to worry about my vision for a long time.
If all goes well, the left eye will be corrected on 08/26/15. I should be completely healed well before fall turkey season, which starts in Oct, & deer season which starts the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Praying for you. I know what you'll go through. I chose the lens to see distance in my left eye. Already have bifocals. Now if I can get the birds to cooperate this fall!

I had to get my driver's license renewed by the end of this week and didn't wear glasses when I got it for the 1st time, when we moved here 10 years ago. Because I was turning that majic # in age, I went to an eye doc my wife uses a month ago, and had him just fill out the form and got it renewed by mail, istead of going thru the hassle of an eye test at the DMV office. Doc said I'm still 20/20, after many moons after having laser eye surgery done in Canada, and at a bargin if I may add. Doc did say, my distance sight, especially with night driving, may start to bother me, so come on back and see him!!!

Thx Dale. The gave me a plastic "patch" I tape on at night to protest the eye & a pair of "high fashion" glasses to wear whenever I'm out side. I found out today that they will fit over my eye glasses which makes it easier to drive.

I found out today that they will fit over my eye glasses which makes it easier to drive. Hey, those "stylish" shades are great, if they're similar to the ones I have. Fit right over the specs and block sun from the sides. I got a several of those hard "patches." After a few days I found that the black pirate-type patch is much easier to sleep with. They are stiff enough to protect your eye during slumber, and more comfortable. No taping. I think I paid $3 for it at the drug store. It is also cool to wear when you go into a store -you look like a hardened tough guy and people move out of your way! People will call you "sir" all the time! ....Alas... as we age, there are fewer opportunities for such fun!

Yep, They are sunglasses. After the 2nd eye is done, they will become my lawn mowing glasses as that should stop stuff from flying in at the sides & top. They shore ain't purty.
I should only have to wear the "patch" for a few more days & then about a week for the 2nd.
Can almost read small print now but it is still blurry. Hopefully the vision will be totally back by Monday.

George, good luck and happy you are doing well. I will have the cataract on my left eye removed and replaced with a toric lens for astigmatism on 8/13 then if all goes well the right eye about a week later. Hopefully, we'll be in good shape for the fall season.

I had the astigmayism removed as part of the procedure & got multi-focal lenses that provide near & far vision. I won't need glasses at all.

I think the astigmatism in my left eye was too bad for that option. I will need cheaters for reading.
